The percentage of tax returns filed on paper continues to shrink slowly but steadily each year as more and more Americans decide, with the relative convenience of e-filing, they don’t need to bring ink and paper into this. However, should you want them, as always, the library has you covered with paper copies of the 1040, 1040 A, 1040 EZ, and their respective instruction booklets, and we’ll gladly print out copies of other forms for you if you need them. Sounds easy enough, right?
In a highly uncharacteristic move, our pals at the IRS complicated matters last week by throwing libraries a curveball of an announcement that “the Bipartisan Budget Act enacted on February 9, 2018, that retroactively extended and modified numerous tax provisions covering 2017…may impact some tax forms ordered.” This naturally had us in a tizzy, but the IRS has since sent out a follow-up message stating “please continue to provide patrons the 2017 tax forms and instructions you received as most taxpayers’ 2017 tax returns are not affected by the recent changes in legislation.” They stress that updated versions of affected/changed forms will only be available on irs.gov, and tax filers are strongly encouraged to check there for updated information and forms.
The claim that “most” taxpayers aren’t affected by the changes is at least somewhat comforting, but what if you’re one of the few rather than the many? Dr. Spock would tell you the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, but we’d hate to leave anybody hanging. Continue to take our forms and instruction booklets, but play it safe and check this page on the IRS website to see if any of the listed changes apply to you:
