If you’re not doing scary readin’ in October, you’re doing it wrong. There’s no penalty for not doing it; no knife-wielding, homicidal maniac is going to advance on you very, very slowly if you opt to not indulge. Reading horror novels is, however, one of the best ways to give yourself the Halloween warm and fuzz…er, cold and slitheries, along with watching horror movies/shows, donning a costume, and letting a werewolf or vampire bite you.
We currently have a creepily curated book display in the library to help you find a hair-raising read that (Cthulu) calls to you. If you need a little additional inspiration, or if you’re already a horror buff and want to test your knowledge, try one or all of these quizzes and see if you can beat the scores of a middle-to-upper-middle tier horror fan (me):
The Horror Book Quiz via Goodreads – This one is heavy on the classics and older stuff; there’s only one title from beyond the ‘70s. Questions about plot specifics will make it a bit tough for those who haven’t actually read the titles in question.
My score: 9/15
Basic Horror Literature Test via Zimbio – This is the easiest one. The questions are fairly general, meaning many will be able to identify the books being asked about even without having read them.
My score: 16/16
Classic Horror Book Covers via the Guardian – I actually mentioned and took this one last October, but slightly improved my score this year. The covers pictured are all of well-known titles, but you don’t get to see the whole cover, which can make it tricky.
My score: 7/10
Horror Fiction: A Quiz About Stories of the Macabre via GimmeTrivia – This one features popular horror staples and mixes in a couple of more modern titles.
My score: 8/10
If you did well, heads off to you. If your performance was more on the ghastly side, that’s all the more reason to feast on some more horror this year. If you’re into both spooky stuff and being quizzed, you’ll definitely want to check out our Halloween-themed trivia night at 3 Parrots Taco Shop on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30 PM. We’ll have braaaaaaain-teasing questions on books, movies & TV, music, history, general knowledge and more for you and your coven of trivia buddies to slay. If you come in costume, you’ll score some free extra points. Hop on your broomstick and fly, fire up the hearse and drive, or zombie shuffle your way there.
